Blakemore Retail is set to boost the number of Subway franchises in stores across its estate
It says the move follows the success of the division’s dual branded Subway-Spar stores in Newark, Nottinghamshire and Battlefield in Shrewsbury.
The business is now aiming to develop the model across a larger number of stores during the current financial year. The strategy is to develop 20 sites during the next 12 months. Fresh food development manager Matt Teague said: “Hopefully, this will be just the start of our plans, as we see Subway to be a perfect food service partner for Spar. Providing our sales develop to the levels we expect them to, we will definitely see our estate of Subway restaurants grow steadily during the next five years.”
The first seven stores to undergo a Subway development were announced at Blakemore Retail’s conference sessions during June and were named as Ponthir, Hillsborough, Bannerbrook, Valley, Ludlow, Gwersyllt and Brindley Place.
The expansion plans, which will create more than 140 new positions across Blakemore Retail’s stores, are expected to create career opportunities for existing staff as well as local people.
Teague added: “This is another exciting development for Blakemore Retail and illustrates our commitment to developing the business and tackling the trading pressures that are arising from the advancement of competitors such as Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local.”
