Bidvest Fresh, the meat, poultry, fish, seafood and dairy arm of foodservice giant Bidvest 3663, has bought a “majority” stake in London-based meat wholesaler Hensons Foods.
Hensons, which operates out of a depot in Kings Cross, North London, has been supplying chefs and chains with high quality meat since 1895. It is most famous for its salt beef and gourmet burgers but also supplies cheese and seafood.
Formerly a family firm, it was bought by conglomerate Thorn EMI in the 1970s and is now owned by its three managers, commercial director Warren Bignell, MD Andrew Brook and sales director Julian Burgess (Bignell and Brook are pictured) since an MBO in 2004. The company was featured in a Wholesale News feature in April last year.
According to The Grocer, Hensons will continue to operate as an independent company and that there will be no changes to either jobs or depots.
Bidvest Fresh’s other specialist UK brands include Campbell Brothers (meat), Oliver Kay (produce and dairy) and Direct Seafoods.
